Memorial website in the memory of your loved one

This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved ones, Erika Smrekar and David Smrekar.  Erika was born in Germany on September 15, 1942 and passed away on July 08, 2006 at the age of 63. David was born in Chicago, IL on July 1, 1941 and passed away on December 16, 2006 at the age of 65.  We will remember them forever.

David W. Smrekar, 65, formerly of Racine, died Saturday, December 16, 2006, as the result of a tragic automobile accident. David was born on July 1, 1941, in Chicago, Ill., to Emma (nee: Bella) and John Smrekar. David was raised in Millston, where he worked at his parent's landmark restaurant, "Grandma Smrekar's Dining Room." After David graduated from Black River Falls High School, he relocated to Racine and got a job at Sears and Roebuck Company, where he was a loyal employee for more than 32 years. After David retired from Sears, he and his son, David, were Co-owners of Total Car Total Care in Racine for several years. David met the love of his life, Erika while roller skating in Zion, Ill., a fun pastime he enjoyed sharing with his children and grandchildren. David married the love of his life, the former Erika Schollmayer on October 7, 1961, at St. Mary's Church in Kenosha. In November of 2004, David and Erika moved back to Millston to retire and enjoy their lives together. They loved their trips to Mexico, Las Vegas, Nev., and Portland, Ore. to see his brother. David loved camping with his family and especially loved hunting and fishing with all his buddies, especially his son and son-in-law and his grandchildren. David instilled a passion for fly tieing and fishing and hunting in all his grandchildren. David also enjoyed his coffee visits with his special friends at Castlewood Restaurant in Sturtevant. David also loved photography and took many beautiful photos over the years during their travels. David will be deeply missed by everyone that was lucky to have known him; the world lost a kind and loving soul that will never be replaced. David is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Annamarie and Thomas Petersen and their children, David's "little dolly" and "big buds," his loving grandchildren: Amanda (Daniel) Kaprelian; grandsons, Robin and Benjamin Ellison; great-granddaughter, Summer Lynn Ellison; great-grandson, Daniel Kaprelian II, all of Racine; and his loving son, David John Smrekar and his children, David's "little buddies," his loving grandsons: Devin and Dalton Smrekar, all of Racine. David is further survived by his brothers, Jack Smrekar of Portland, Ore., Daniel Smrekar of Millston, and Thomas (Joan) Smrekar of Barron; sister, Iris Ferk of Wisconsin Rapids; and brother-in-law, George (Sonia) Matic of Kenosha. David is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other family, and dear friends. David was preceded in death just five short months ago by his loving wife of 44 years, Erika, who he faithfully cared for in her fight with cancer; his parents; and grandparents, John and Anna Smrekar. Funeral services will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home, 1212 Lathrop Avenue, on Thursday, December 21, 2006, at 7 p.m. Interment will be held at Brookside Cemetery in Millston on Saturday, December 23, 2006, at 12 noon. Friends may meet with the family at the Wilson Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. Memorials in memory of David to the American Cancer Society, Hope Lodge in Marshfield, or to the family have been suggested. Erika was born on September 15, 1942, in Nienburg (Weser), Germany to Erika (nee: Kunneman) and Wilhelm Schollmayer.  She moved to Kenosha in September of 1955 to live with her mother and step-father, Erika and Radovan Matic. On October 7, 1961, at St. Mary's Church in Kenosha, she was united in marriage to David W. Smrekar, her beloved husband, who stayed by her side through this long battle. She and David moved to Millston in November of 2004 to retire and enjoy their lives.  She proudly became a United States citizen on November 18, 1957. Erika was employed with Multi Products for many years. She also worked for High Ridge Health Center and Lincoln Lutheran Homes doing what she loved - caring for the elderly in their last years. She also worked at many of Racine's supper clubs. Her most recent job was at Castlewood Restaurant in Sturtevant. Erika was a member of the former Holy Name Parish of Racine. Everyone who knew Erika will miss her practical jokes and great sense of humor. She and her grandson, Ben, were avid Tony Stewart fans.  Erika is survived by David, her loving husband of 44 years; her daughter and son-in-law, Annamarie and Thomas Petersen and their children, Erika's loving grandchildren, Amanda (fiance, Daniel Kaprellian), Robin, and Benjamin Ellison, and great-granddaughter, Summer Lynn Ellison, all of Racine; her son, David John Smrekar and his children, Erika's loving grandsons, Devin and Dalton Smrekar, all of Racine; brother, George (Sonia) Matic of Kenosha; very special brothers-in-law, Daniel Smrekar of Millston, Jack Smrekar of Portland, Ore., and Thomas (Joan) Smrekar of Barron; sister-in-law, Iris Ferk of Wisconsin Rapids; many nieces and nephews; and too many friends to count. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, August and Elsa Kunneman; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Emma and John Smrekar.

The Four Candles burned slowly.

Their Ambiance was so soft you
could hear them speak...
The first candle said, "I Am Peace, but these days, nobody
wants to keep me lit."Then Peace's flame slowly
diminishes and goes out completely.
The second candle says, "I Am Faith, but these days, I am
no longer indispensable."Then Faith's flame slowly
diminishes and goes out completely.
Sadly the third candle spoke, "I Am Love and I haven't the
strength to stay lit any longer."
"People put me aside and don't understand my
importance. They even forget to love those who are
nearest to them."And waiting no longer, Love goes out
Suddenly...A child enters the room and sees the three
candles no longer burning. The child begins to cry, "Why
are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit until the
Then the Fourth Candle spoke gently to the little boy,
"Don't be afraid, for I Am Hope, and while I still burn, we
can re-light the other candles."
With Shining eyes the child took the Candle of Hope and
lit the other three candles.
Never let the Flame of Hope go out of your life.
With Hope, no matter how bad things look and
are...Peace, Faith and Love can Shine Brightly in our lives.

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free!
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.

Tasks left undone, must stay that way,
I found peace at close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy!
A love shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes! These things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've savoured much
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, he set me free
